Introduction to Natal Charts

Hello and welcome to the Astrological Knowledge ezine. This month we are starting our series about natal charts and how to interpret them. I hope you find it interesting and informative.

We will start by having a look at a basic natal chart itself. For this example we have used a placidus chart type which is divided into twelve houses.

As you can see the outer circle has the zodiac signs relating to different areas of the chart on it. Cutting across the middle of the chart is a line, this represents where the Ascedant is, and on this chart is marked with the letters AC. The Ascendant is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at your time of birth and is also known as your rising sign. The Ascendant is always in the first house of your chart. Astrologers need to know your time of birth to accurately find which Ascendant you fall under, the sign changes about every two hours. If your time of birth is wrong, your ascendant will most likely be wrong and the signs of all the other houses will be wrong too. In this example the Ascendant is in Capricorn.

Looking further up you will notice the letters MC. This is the Medium Coeli also called the MC or Midheaven and refers to the highest point on the chart. It is the point of culmination where the planets reach the point on their apparent orbits highest above the horizon. The position of the MC on your chart can reveal how you conduct yourself in the outside world. This includes your role in public and your professional career.

The middle circle you will notice in this example is numbered, with the number one in the house to the left hand side middle of the chart (9 o'clock). This is the Ascedant and it then follows around the chart to the number 12, although some different charting systems will have less or more houses. We will be discussing the significance of the different  Astrological Houses in a persons natal chart in coming issues of this ezine.

You will also notice astrological  glyphs within these segmented parts of the chart. These represent the different planets and show us in which zodiac sign and which astrological house they were in at the time of birth. The placement of the different planets in various houses reflects in different ways how we are likely to approach or react to situations. In this instance we have also added some additional glyphs representing the Parts of Fortune, Chiron, Moon Node and the black moon Lilith.

Within the inner circle we see a lot of different colored lines forming different patterns. This is a mapping of the aspects between the different planets in the natal chart. The aspects relate to the positions that the planets are in, in relation to each other. When planets are squared or opposed to each other this can sometimes indicate that there may be significant challenges to overcome in these areas. Oppositions are not always a bad thing though and sometimes can be seen as an invigorating and beneficial combination between two planets. We also look at the more positive aspects known as trines, sextiles and conjunctions.

Other areas worth noting on an astrological natal chart are the clustering of the planets within the chart. A grouping of planets in a certain area of a persons chart will certainly be indicative that this is an area of a persons life which will be particularly important and impact greatly on their life. We can also look at the elements in a persons chart and determine if a person has a predominant element type as well as noting any lack of an elemental type and ponder how this may effect their life. Quite often a deficiency of an element type on a chart will indicate areas in a persons life where extra effort will need to be input to fully overcome the challenges that the absence of this element may present.

This is just the very tip of the iceberg. In future issues we will be looking at all of these topics in greater detail. Astrology is such a vast topic covering so many different variables that to be able to condense even a basic introduction to natal chart interpretation is not really practical.
